A Rainbow of Trash

This photo was taken during my Kuya’s birthday party held at Villa Levita in Agan-an. It must be the alcohol in my brain that pushed me to do a solo coastal clean-up (usually my friend Ryan joins me). Haha! Some of my friends were even laughing at what I was doing, but I ignored them. I was a bit drunk. hahah! However, after collecting those plastics and other trash from the water where I have been swimming, I realized how DIRTY it was. “Gross!!!!” according to Chatty. Tsk tsk tsk! It’s just getting worst…  I was bothered.

Perhaps one of the reasons why I have such concern for the environment is because I have taken two Environmental Journalism subjects way back in college, and I still remember making reports and joining discussions about the beached whale shark, the Dumaguete dumpsite, oil spills, and of course the “reduce, reuse, recycle” campaign (reminds me of Jack Johnson’s song “3R”). It was one of my most favorite subjects.

Having taken that subject, I knew that coastal clean-ups aren’t enough to eradicate water pollution. It’s true that we are part of the problem and that we are part of the solution. However, this problem is a giant system that is slowly eating us. Even if we care, the “producers” of trash do not. The enemy is powerful. But we should not stop believing we can solve it. We are weak if we are not united. Asking “why it’s happening” I think is a good start for all of us.

What I did was just a “trip”, and I had fun. I had fun picking up other people’s waste. I was able to collect sandals, plastic forks, plastic cups, sachets (with “MILO” and “DEL MONTE” marked on it), a comb, etc. (I kept the comb by the way, and I’m using it now. haha!). Point is, “at least” I am concerned. Now, I am recalling what I learned from my EJ subjects, and I’m studying again environmental issues.

At this very moment, I am watching 24 oras. The report is about the effect of Typhoon Frank in Cotabato, causing floods and landslides. Yet, it seems like people are already USED TO IT. Calamities have become normal. We don’t pay attention not until we are the ones affected. So… should we just wait?

i can remember when we were on board in a ferry where my daughter who was 6 years old yelled at her friend throwing a trash to the seawater… Proper disposal of our waste is also a basic respect to other species or even organisms who has the saem right to co-exist in this planet… i admire u more

I like this topic.More respect to you ma friend.

Aside from not throwing your garbage just anywhere like what most people still do these days (pathetic!):

1.Stop using plastic materials as much as possible. e.g. i bring my own bottles (for drinking) and i stopped buying ridiculously expensive bottled mineral water.ALSO, when grocery shopping i want the stuff in carton boxes NOT IN PLASTIC BAGS.

2.Since it is now common knowledge that plastic hog corporations who produces these garbage DO NOT care in preserving the EARTH at all, because all they want is profit for themselves, simply, I BOYCOTT THEIR PRODUCTS: chips on plastic, juice drinks on plastic, the list goes on!Bahala nag makadaot basta maka ginansya sila! One good example is my EX-FAVORITE PRINGLES.It used to be in a carboard container. Now, they’re also produced encased in hard plastic container, INSIDE another plastic bag.Genius!More plastic for dying mommy Earth.(sometimes i wonder if it’s really their intention to destroy the environment)

it’s nice to bump into blogs which is diverse and tackle issues that are really worth reading. unlike most blogs wherein bloggers’ main reason is to shout to the world that they have been to this place, attended this gig, saw this celebrity, etc…anyweiz, enough of my ranting…
people now are more aware of what is going on with our environment especially with regards global warming or climate change…there are a lot of things that can be done and simple things like what you just did…even though you said that it was just a”trip” is already a step to help combat climate change! yehey!
(FYI: We should welcome the passage of the Renewable Energy Bill by the Senate. Ugtos after 18 golden years!!!)
